Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - "Men Might Want to Drink Coffee and Exercise to Fight Prostate Cancer!"

Current health guidelines are recommending that men start screening themselves for Prostate cancer starting at the age of 40. Prostate cancer is a more serious concern in men the older they get.

This article is suggesting a protective link between coffee, exercise and prostate cancer as seen in two studies. However, the lead researcher is the first to admit that there still needs to be a lot more study regarding the connection but it appears that both can help to reduce a man's mortality to prostate cancer.

The study looked at data collected for 50, 000 men. It found only a weak relationship between coffee consumption (6 or more cups per day) and a reduced risk of all forms of prostate cancer. But the interesting thing was, this relationship grew stronger if the form of cancer was more aggressive. The researcher also hinted that the more coffee a person drank, the larger the effect noted.

"I wouldn't recommend that people change their coffee-drinking habits based on this study," said Kathryn M. Wilson, a research fellow in epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, and lead author of one report. "But if you like coffee, there is no compelling reason to cut back at this point."

Wilson also wanted to uncover the rationale behind this effect. She stated that is was not due to the caffeine in coffee but suspected something else. Wilson believes coffee's benefits lie in it's effect on glucose and insulin metabolism.

In a related study on Prostate cancer and outcome, it was found that exercise also had an effect on improving the prognosis for cancer patients. This study found that the mortality rate was 56% lower in men who exercised vigorously (at least 5 hours/week) compared to men who did not exercise at all.

This is just another reason to continue exercise and a healthy lifestyle as you get older.

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - "Menopause and Worsening Cholesterol Often Related"

As many people know by now, Cardiovascular disease is more and more prevalent now more than ever. Many health professionals have encouraged healthy lifestyle habits in their patients, especially exercise and a sensible diet.

The following study is particularly of interest to women. It is just another in a growing body of research that links menopause with increased cardiovascular risk, in this case, Cholesterol.

This data comes from an ongoing study that has followed 3000 women since 1996. Researchers are finding that with menopause comes decreased levels of estrogen and it seems to be related to elevated levels of LDL (Bad Cholesterol) in the body.

"This suggests that as women approach menopause, they need to have their lipid profiles checked," said Karen A. Matthews, a professor of psychiatry, epidemiology and psychology at the University of Pittsburgh and the study's lead author. A report on the findings is published in the Dec. 15/22 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, which is focused on prevention of cardiovascular disease.

To reiterate the underlying message is that women need to pay closer attention to their lifestyle habits and weight as they get older. The ideal scenario is to have adopted healthy eating habits and exercise while young, so as to minimize the natural effects of age. (As a side note, it is well known that Osteoporsis is more of a concern in women than men as we age. Bone density is well established by a woman's 20's, so healthy living and exercise is a wise choice for bone as well as cardiovascular health)

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - "Long-Term Back Pain Can Be Avoided - Study"

Many of my patients that see me suffer from chronic low back pain. Or they suffer seemingly 'regular' bouts of back pain that lasts maybe 2-3 weeks, perhaps a few times a year. These same patients often ask me if they'll ever be able to live without fear of pain or the next episode.

Studies have shown and I believe this wholeheartedly, that a person must adopt a healthy lifestyle complete with active stretches and exercise if they are hoping to 'beat' chronic back pain for good. This article I came across demonstrates that a significant number of chronic back pain patients can also get better with time.

This study involved 400 participants who sought care at a primary care provider and who had not recovered after 90 days. During telephone interviews 9 and 12 months later, the patients progress was reassessed.

35% of the respondents reported complete recovery at 9 months and 41% reported complete recovery after a year. The findings show that the rate of recovery from chronic low back pain is higher than previously reported and that the prognosis for these patients isn't uniformly poor, said lead study author Dr. Luciola Menezes Costa of the University of Sydney.

These results are reassuring to patients with chronic back pain because it shows that relief is possible. However, from a Chiropractor's stand point, I can't help but think of the 60% who are still suffering after a year. Needless to say, this study shows that the majority of patients who seek primary care for their back pain are still in pain more than a year later.

If you're like me, then you agree that this is entirely unacceptable. In my practice I have helped many patients with long term pain. But right from the start, I educate my patients that with a little bit of patience, some effort and commitment, they have a good chance of beating low back pain. In fact surveys have shown that back pain patients who seek care from a Chiropractor are significantly more satisfied with their care compared to conventional medicine. So if you've never tried Chiropractic, what are you waiting for?

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - "Spinal Injuries are Common in Car Accidents'

In my practice, I often see patients who have been involved in a car accident. By far the area most affected is the neck in my office. I also have patients complain of shoulder, back and low back pain as well. I also notice that because a lot of accidents are rear-enders, the neck is especially vulnerable. However, collisions from the side and front also wreak havoc on the neck as well as other parts of the body.

Another common concern many people involved in car accidents have is, 'how long until I get better'. This questions is more difficult to answer. Of course, a priority for many people is reduction of pain symptoms and headaches. Unfortunately, I notice that these patients also lose function in their bodies. By this I mean weakness in the muscles/joints, loss of motion in the joints, pain upon moving too much and similar findings. I always advise patients who have been involved in a car accident to take their time. The injuries incurred are not like a simple muscle strain due to over-doing it at the gym. For many reasons, recovery will be far more involved.

This article sheds some light on the major causes of injuries in car accidents and some common sense ways to lessen the damage of a crash.

Nearly 13% of people in car crashes suffer spinal injuries serious enough to cause paralysis or death. But a new study finds that greater use of seatbelts and airbags could greatly reduce this statistic.

"It is extremely important to come to grips with the carnage on the highways," said Dr. Charles H. Tator, a professor of neurosurgery at the University of Toronto, who wrote an editorial accompanying the study, published in the February issue of the Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine.

"If we lost 1/100th of these people to meningitis, there would be a national outcry, but because it's just another crash and a few more deaths we don't get serious about it," he added.

The researchers also suggested lowering the speed limits on our roadways. The researchers pointed out that many drivers travel at speeds that exceed the limit. Traveling at those kinds of speeds not only makes it harder for people to react to driving situations, but it also increases the severity of injuries if a crash does occur.

Now with the technological age and the rise of cellphone use and texting while driving, it only seems that the risks involved with driving has just gone up. From a Chiropractor's note, please drive safely and carefully. Talking or being distracted while driving is just too much of a gamble just for convenience sake.

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - "Breast Feeding Can Help a Mother's Heart"

So some of you may be wondering why a Chiropractor is writing a post about breastfeeding. Well the answer is simple, being by the Commercial Drive neighborhood, I see many new and expectant moms. As I help them relieve pain and achieve better health, the conversation always includes, "What's good for the baby?".

Many of you have heard the benefits of breast milk to a growing baby, but this recent study actually showed benefits to the cardiovascular health of the mother as well. I encourage all my female patients to breastfeed their babies whenever possible.

Ok, so now on to the details of the study.

This study is going to appear December 3 in the online version of the journal, Diabetes. This study involved about 1400 women and they were re-evaluated at regular intervals over 20 years. (Just to note, a 20 year follow up is great and only adds to the validity and relevance of the researcher's findings)

The researchers found that breast feeding, even for a little as a few months can lower a woman's chance of developing metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a group of cardiovascular risk factors and is commonly associated with cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The researchers also found that the longer a mother breastfed her baby, the better it was for her. Women who breastfed for longer than 9 months found their risk for developing metabolic syndrome dropped by 86% if they had gestational diabetes. For women who did not develop gestational diabetes, their risk dropped by 56%.

"Breast-feeding has favorable health benefits for women as well as for children. Breast-feeding may help protect women from heart disease and diabetes in the future," said the study's lead author, Erica Gunderson, an epidemiologist and research scientist at the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland, Calif.

Researchers admit they were not studying how this "protection" for the mothers was occurring, but a reasonable explanation was proposed. Breast feeding is thought to increase the levels of good cholesterol in the mothers while helping to reduce belly fat. In addition, breast feeding may help control the body's insulin levels. All these factors considered, may be helping to reduce the chance of developing metabolic syndrome.

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - "Exercise Cuts Stroke Risk in Men But Not Women"

Ok I know this headline got your attention and now you're probably scratching your head. However, it is very important to note that you must be critical of research at times and use your best judgement and common sense.

Here are the details of the study. The group consisted of 3,300 men and women and the average age of the participants was 69. The study was conducted over a nine year period. At the beginning, 20% of the participants reported to have engaged in regular moderate to high intensity exercise. Conversely, 41% said they had no physical activity at all.

During the course of nine years, there were 238 strokes reported. Most importantly though, men who reported engaging in moderate-to-high intensity exercise were nearly 63% less likely to suffer a stroke than those who did not exercise at all. However, a similar effect was not found in the women of this study.

"Taking part in moderate-to-heavy intensity physical activity may be an important factor for preventing stroke," study author Dr. Joshua Z. Willey, of Columbia University Medical Center and New York Presbyterian Hospital at Columbia, concluded in a news release.

Another caveat the researchers of this study pointed out was that many of the participants lived in a big city. They reasoned that living in a big city may decrease your activity level. However, with the results they found, it may be the inhabitants of a city that may stand to benefit the most.

The moral of the story is with cardiovascular disease being a leading cause of death of both men and women, exercise can help to decrease this risk dramatically. As if there weren't enough known benefits of regular exercise, this might be one of the best reasons of all.

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - "Loving Relationships May Block Pain"

Researchers in the US have found that merely thinking of a loved one can help to reduce physical pain. They claim this underscores the importance of relationships and staying emotionally connected with others.

The study performed at UCLA involved 25 young women who had been involved in a relationship for at least 6 months. The researchers had the participants look at pictures of their boyfriends, a stranger and an object. Then they introduced a mildly uncomfortable trigger in the form of heat, while the women looked at the pictures.

Researcher, Naomi Eisenberger, noted that when the women were looking at pictures of their boyfriends, they reported less pain compared to when they were looking at pictures of objects or strangers.

Interestingly enough, pain reduction was also reported if the women were holding the hands of their boyfriends while the heat was being applied.

"This study demonstrates how much of an impact our social ties can have on our experience and fits with other work emphasizing the importance of social support for physical and mental health," Eisenberger added.

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - "Depression Can Be as Harmful as Smoking - Study"

A new study suggests that being depressed can take as many years off your life as smoking.

Researchers poured over the death records and surveyed 60, 000 people. Over the four years of the study, the death rate appeared to be higher in those respondents who were considered depressed. The increase was roughly similar to the respondents considered to be smokers.

"Unlike smoking, we don't know how causal the association with depression is, but it does suggest that more attention should be paid to this link because the association persisted after adjusting for many other factors," lead researcher Dr. Robert Stewart, of Kings College London, said in a news release from the college.

But the underlying message to take home here is the connection between mental and physical health. Currently there is growing understanding of the relationship between mind and body but more studies are needed to explore all the nuances involved.

"The physical health of people with current or previous mental disorder needs a lot more attention than it gets at the moment," Stewart said.

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - "Warning: More MRI Machines May Mean More Back Surgeries"

According to US researchers, having easy access to MRI machines may be a bad thing for patients for new onset of low back pain.

Researchers looked at data collected from 1998-2005 and found that patients complaining of new back pain were more likely to have back surgery if they lived in an area with a higher proportion of MRI machines. The research also found that these patients often got an MRI within the first month of their low back pain starting. However, clinical guidelines suggest waiting 4 weeks after onset of pain for an MRI because after this time, many patients report improvement anyways.

So what's the problem you may ask? Well the problem lies in the outcome of treatment.
Previous research has demonstrated that surgery does not improve the outcome of patients, especially with new-onset low back pain.

"The worry is that many people will not benefit from surgery, so heading in this direction is concerning," senior author Laurence Baker, a professor of health research and policy, said in the release.

The clear message is that if you are suffering from new-onset of low back pain, it is far more prudent to investigate more conservative forms of care such as Chiropractic. It can not only offer relief but in many cases, help avoid a more invasive surgery.

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - "Do You Know Where Germs Live? H1N1 tips"

Now with the recent worldwide concern over Swine flu, health authorities have continually been recommending frequent hand washing and limiting hand contact with others in order to prevent catching this "bug"

Well an interesting study to be published in the online version of Science, seems to reinforce these recommendations. Now a note, H1N1 is a virus and this study in question focused on bacteria. However, a little common sense would suggest as far as transmission through contact is concerned, this information could be helpful in both cases.

Ok now on with study. This study used sophisticated gene sequencing to determine what kind of bacteria (germs) we have on our bodies, and even where they are likely to be found. "We've always known that there are microbes on us and in us," said study author Noah Fierer, an assistant professor of microbial ecology at the University of Colorado at Boulder. "But we weren't always able to isolate them and differentiate them from each other. With these new techniques, we can."

Well the study found that these germs tend to be more prominent in certain places on our bodies. Those places being; forearms, palms, index fingers, the backs of the knees and soles of the feet, according to the study

Quite interesting and sobering at the same time. When you think about the current concern over H1N1, and the corresponding recommendations, it seems limiting contact is definitely a prudent thing to do. Also frequent hand washing can help you from contracting H1N1 especially if germs tend to hang out around your hands and fingers.

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - "Texting Can Lead to Neck and Arm Pain"

New research is suggesting that too much texting can lead to hand, shoulder and neck pain. The study found that young people who hunched over and only used one thumb to text suffered from more hand, neck and arm pain compared to those who used other finger to text and sat straight.

This is an extension of a phenomenon becoming more common; "Blackberry Thumb". As mobile devices become a more common means of communicating and sending messages, repetitive strain injuries related to our cell phones is bound to rise.

Ewa Gustafsson, an ergonomist at the Sahlgrenska Academy in Sweden is sounding the alarm on the way people today interact with technology. A significant factor is also the frequency we are messaging on our phones nowadays. A concern echoed by, Dr. David Edelstein. "The difference between the computer age and the typewriter age is that people don't stop," said Dr. David Edelstein, orthopedic and hand surgeon at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. "They are typing all day. During their lunch break they are using a mouse or texting, and they may go home and do more."

So the next time your Blackberry beckons, take a second to make sure you're using good posture. It could save you a lot of suffering down the road.

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - "How Fish Oils Help Arthritis; New Study"

Many people have heard the suggestion that Fish Oil helps people with arthritis for a while now. In fact a handful of my patients take Fish Oil regularly not just to aid them with arthritis but for other health benefits as well.

Now a recent study coming from Queen Mary University of London and Harvard has shed new light on just exactly why fish oil seems to help these patients.

Researchers have found a component found in Fish Oil; DHA, is converted in the body into a chemical called Resolvin D2. Resolvin D2 has consequently been found to be a potent anti-inflammatory with researchers claiming a small amount can have a very large effect.

But even more important to researchers was that Resolvin 2, does not seem to harm or suppress the body's own immune system. This potentially makes Resolvin 2 a far better alternative for a wider range of people while possibly being safer as well.

To sign up for a free newsletter full of other useful health information please visit COMMERCIAL DRIVE - EAST VANCOUVER CHIROPRACTOR; DR. DOMINIC CHAN DC

Dr. Chan's Notes: This study is important to not only arthritis patients, but to many other patients as well. For example, patients with cardiovascular disease could also benefit from the anti-inflammatory effects of Resolvin 2, as it could help reduce damage to the arteries.

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - "Fitness Fades Quickly After 45"

It is well known that the aging process affects your fitness levels as you age. However, a recent study to appear in the Archives of Internal Medicine indicates that fitness fades fast after the age of 45.

This was a huge study conducted on about 20,000 people ranging in age from 20 to 96. The study found that the decline in cardiorespiratory fitness/health was not linear with increasing age. In fact the decline in fitness, increased at a faster rate after the age of 45. What's even more concerning was the study found the decline was even worse for participants who had a history of smoking, were over-weight or who were inactive.

To no one's surprise, the implications of these findings will have huge social impacts for everyone. For many years now, our population as a whole has been growing older with more and more baby boomers retiring. As the population ages, the impact of millions of unhealthy people will be a tremendous burden on an already strained health care system.

But wait there is good news!! Researchers say that adopting a healthy lifestyle and exercise can help to delay the effects of age. In essence, exercise can buy you time!
Instead of people suffering from detrimental health effects in their 50's or 60's, a healthy lifestyle and exercise can help delay these effects until you're in your 70's , 80's and even 90's.

Don't forget to visit the website for your COMMERCIAL DRIVE - EAST VANCOUVER CHIROPRACTOR; DR. DOMINIC CHAN DC

Dr. Chan's notes: I think this study is not going to come as a surprise to most people. A healty lifestyle and exercise has so many benefits that we could go on for days. But just stop and think, if regular exercise could buy you time, How can you put a price on that?

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - Glucosamine Fails Osteoarthritis Test

A recent study from the University of Pittsburgh indicates that Glucosamine was not successful in preventing cartilage loss in patients with Osteoarthritis of the knee.

Many people with Osteoarthritis of the knee take Glucosamine in order to slow or reduce the disease's progression. However, other studies have questioned it's effectiveness.

Dr. C. Kwoh, studied a group of 201 participants with mild to moderate knee pain. One group received Glucosamine while the other received a placebo. Bone lesions were monitored and it was noted worsening lesions were the same in both groups. In addition, researchers also noted that there was no difference in cartilage synthesis between the groups.

The study used MRI machines in order to visualize and monitor changes over a six month trial period.

Glucosamine is a natural supplement taken by many who are suffering from joint pain, tenderness and inflammation.
The researchers in the study did admit that any patient suffering from joint disease must consider a review of their lifestyle as a whole including diet and exercise.

Researchers also noted that Glucosamine may play a role in managing the pain associated with Osteoarthritis and this may be the benefit that keep patients taking this supplement.

Dr. Chan's Notes: Although this study looked at physical changes associated with Osteoarthritis, physical findings (imaging) and patient symptoms are often poorly correlated. For example I have seen numerous patients that have seen me for intense back pain, but x-rays showed no physical explanation for the pain.

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor - Dr. Dominic Chan DC; " Ohhh, My Aching.......Economy??"

A recent survey showed that more than 65% of respondents felt that the poor economy had adversely affected their bodily aches and pains. These respondents felt that their acute back pain or muscular strains in the past year were affected by the recession due to the increased stress of having to work harder at their jobs and at home.

More specifically the survey found;

- 27% of respondents said the increased stress of work and family life related to the recession, actually increased their physical pain.
- 29% said they were working harder at work or at home and this lead to increased pain.
- 21% said they recession related health issues such as; sleeplessness or delaying health care had a significant effect on their pain.
- 78% of respondents felt that back pain or muscle strain significantly affected their quality of life including; work, their ability to handle other life stresses and even their sex drive.

This survey is a great example of the often overlooked relationship between physical/mental health and overall health. It also underlies how social/ mental factors can significantly affect physical well being and vice versa.

In hard economic times, it is human nature to "ignore" physical symptoms because it feels as though you're doing just enough to keep your head above water, but this is a poor long term strategy. As the saying goes, " Those who do not make time for health, will be forced to make time for sickness". Some food for thought eh?

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - Setting and Achieving Health Goals

Here are some simple steps for successful goal setting;

1) Decide what it is you want to accomplish - Try to be specific and even have a picture in your mind of what it is you wish to achieve.

2) Figure out the "Whys" - Think about the reasons you wish to accomplish this goals. This can help you to succeed if you have the proper motivation.

3) Break your goals into "bite-sized" chunks - Often times, you can break up a goal into smaller goals. This will not only make it easier to reach you major goal but can help to track your progress!

4) Think about any obstacles - It's very important to be realistic with your goals. Often times, you will encounter obstacles on you path to achieving your goals. However, if you have given it some thoughts beforehand, they'll be easier to handle when and if they actually come up.

5) Write it down! - Any goals, including health goals should be written down. Something magical happens when you commit something to paper. Write down a goal and your chances of actually following through increases!

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - "Making SMART Health Goals"

Regularly, I have discussions with patients who are trying to improve their health for the better. They often come to me stating that they want to lose X amount of pounds or exercise 2-3 days a week. However, many of these same people often have difficulties just getting started. To help them, I ask them to think of 'SMART' health goals. Having goals is great. Especially when it comes to something as important as your health, goals not only help you track your progress but they can also serve as motivation.

So here is an introduction to the 'SMART' method of developing goals;

"S" - SPECIFIC - What are your goals? Let's be as specific as possible. An exampleis,
instead of saying you want to "lose weight", a more specific goal
would be, "I want to lose 15 lbs by December 25, 2009". See the
difference?

"M" - MEASURABLE - Pick a goal that you can measure so you can track your progress.
Another example here would be instead of saying, "I want to quit
smoking", a measurable goal would be, "I will allow myself to
smoke 10 cigarettes this week but next week, I will cut it back
to only 7"

"A" - ACHIEVABLE - This is an important point to think about. Do you stand a chance
of actually achieving your goal? The goal should be challenging
but not down right impossible!

"R" - REALISTIC - Realistic goals are crucial but 'realistic' will depend on the
person. Say you've never run a day in your life, well maybe running
a marathon next year is just asking too much. A more realistic
alternative is running a challenging 10 km run first. Remember,
you can always take on the marathon at a later date.

"T" - TIMELY - Set a time frame for your goal. Having a deadline is crucial for
motivation and success. Instead of saying, " sometime next year", set
a date! January 1, 2010 for example. Now you've got the motivation to
get started today!

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - "Osteoporosis"

Today I'd like to discuss a topic that is important to a lot of patients out there, particularly if you're female; Osteoporosis.

What is Osteoporosis exactly? Osteoporosis is a bone disease where by bone mass and tissue deteriorates over time. In effect, the bones become "less dense". A very simple way to think of it would be like imagining Swiss cheese. Now everybody knows Swiss cheese is known for having characteristic "holes" throughout. Now just imagine the Swiss cheese developing more of these holes over time. More holes means more empty space and thus, less cheese. Now this is a crude example but I think you get the picture.

Now a common misconception is that Osteoporosis is a problem unique to females, but not so. Did you know that 1 in 8 men over the age of 50 will also develop Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis, is known as a "silent thief" because as the bones deteriorate, the patient often notices no symptoms at all. However, Osteoporosis is a real problem because with weaker bones, a person may be subject to disfigurement, lowered self esteem, loss of mobility and an increased chance of severe injury.

For example, as one ages, co-ordination and balance often suffers. This is a major reason why falls are more common in the elderly. Now if a person with Osteoporosis also suffers a fall, the chance of a fracture goes way up. Did you know that 80% of hip fractures are Osteoporosis related? Once an elderly person suffers a hip fracture, the chances of complications and maybe even death also become a very real possibility.

So what can you do to prevent Osteoporosis? firstly, you might want to get a bone scan or measure your bone density. It's good to know what you're starting with right. Next, there are simple things like the appropriate exercise, nutrition and even supplements that can help to prevent osteoporosis. It's a good idea to have a talk with your doctor/ Chiropractor to find out the appropriate actions for you.

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - "How Chiropractic Works (In Everyday Terms)"

This is a very important question and one that many people have of Chiropractic, especially those that have never been to one. So how does Chiropractic work?

I've heard people and even patients say to me, "Chiropractors 'crack' bones, re-align your joints and then you feel better". Well, although that's not entirely wrong, it's just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

What's missing in this description is the understanding that your nervous system plays an even bigger role. Let's put it this way. Most people will seek the help of a Chiropractor when they feel pain or discomfort. Ever stop to think what exactly is going on here? Well, pain is your body's way of telling you that, 'something's wrong' and you need to address it. "Pain" is how your brain interprets the signals it gets from the rest of your nervous system. Like cars travelling on a highway, your nervous system is how your brain and the rest of the body communicates with each other.

Now most people have experienced a traffic jam before. Cars and trucks just stuck and going nowhere. But a few miles ahead is a three car pile-up. This small accident can have a significant effect on traffic for miles. This accident can even stall traffic going the other way!

Well imagine if something similar occurred with your nervous system. The signals traveling along your nerves like cars on a highway can become 'stalled' or interrupted. Now a chain reaction occurs resulting in your body feeling "PAIN!!".

Now how Chiropractic works simply is to help to restore function! Chiropractic works to keep your nervous system working well and making sure there is no irritation or 'roadblocks' along this information highway. Chiropractic care can help to reduce inflammation in irritated tissue thereby restoring normal function and reducing pain.

This can be done without the use of drugs, which often just temporarily mask the symptoms. It's like tricking your brain into thinking there's no problem at all.

Hopefully this explanation helps to get people thinking differently about pain. More importantly, I hope it helps you to understand how Chiropractic works!

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor: Dr. Dominic Chan DC - "Chiropractic Is Cost-Effective In Treating Chronic Back Pain, Study"

This study from the United States wanted to compare the cost effectiveness of Chiropractic care compared to standard medical interventions for people suffering from back pain.

A little background first; in the U.S. alone, "back-pain" costs the American economy an estimated $48 billion a year. A staggering amount and one that underscores the prevalance of this problem. It is also estimated that at any given time, 80% of the population will be suffering from back pain.

Now back to the study. The researcher followed 2780 patients with mechanical low back pain who referred themselves to either Doctors of Chiropractic or General Practitioners. The cost of treatment and also the patient's satisfaction of care were monitored at 3 and 12 months after their initial visits.

The study found that initially, Chiropractic care cost more, however when additional costs involving medical care was factored in such as; advanced imaging, physical therapy, and specialists, Chiropractic care quickly became more cost-effective.
More importantly, when asked about their satisfaction of care, the respondents rated Chiropractic care more favorably than those who opted for standard medical care.

Important to note was that both choices for low back pain treatment involved physical activity and exercise, however it appears that Chiropractic patients fared better in the long term (ie. at 12 months) than patients who saw a General Practitioner. All things being considered, this study strongly suggests that Chiropractic is not only a viable treatment option for patients suffering from low back pain, but for a medical system as a whole, a cost-effective one as well!

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor: Dr. Dominic Chan DC - "Let's go Biking!"

Well the summer is here in full force and what better way to enjoy the outdoors than to go for a bike ride.

Luckily, Vancouver is a city that has a multitude of bike paths and parks that are bike friendly. In addition, the city has introduced a dedicated bike lane on the Burrard bridge going into and leaving the downtown core.

Bike riding is a great cardiovascular exercise. It works the major muscles of your legs and hips. In addition to being easy for most people, bike riding is also a fun activity you can enjoy alone, or with friends!

In practice, I actually encourage my patients to ride bikes because many of them have recurring or acute lower back and hip issues. I find that riding bikes is great for them not only for the exercise but for proprioception of their muscles too. That's to say, once you're on a bike and pedaling, you become very aware of tightness or muscular imbalances regarding your hips and lower back. This can actually help patients to become more aware of their bodies and can help to gauge their progress and recovery.

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC: Sitting Can be Hazardous to Your Health!

Do I have your attention now? That's right, researchers have found a link between the amount of time you spend sitting in your day and your mortality rate.

Researchers asked 17,000 people, "How much do you spend sitting in your typical day?". They then followed the respondents over the next 12 years and compared their mortality rates. What they found was truly astounding. They discovered that those people who spent half of their day sitting, had a significantly increased risk of dying from ANY cause!! They also found that those respondents who sat the most during their day, had a 54% increased risk of dying in the 12 years following compared to the people who sat the least.

But here is the sobering component. The results were independent of whether you were old or young, smoker or non-smoker or even if you were over-weight or not. Meaning the risk of sitting too much can not be completely removed by your activity level.

So what are some things you can do right now to lower your risk?

- Start moving around more. Take periodic breaks from your computer and walk around. The study even suggests that spending some time standing at work can even be helpful. ie. standing while you're on the phone.

- Look for ways you can be more active at work. Examples include, taking the stairs or even parking your car further away from the entrance so you get just a bit more exercise each day.

- Looking for alternative ways to commute. ie taking public transit to work or biking.

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC: " A Chiropractor to tell your friends about"

You know what I love about practice? It's when you help a patient and they are so happy and grateful for your care that they say, " You know, my husband/wife/brother/co-worker etc. could really use your care. Do you accept new patients?"

I mean wow! what an awesome compliment. I think it's a great honor to treat the loved ones of my existing patients. But this actually got me thinking, " How many of my patients are referred to me by existing patients or other health care professionals?".

So I went about tabulating the data. I decided to review my records for the first six months of this year. Here are the results from January to June 2009;

New Patients referred from existing patients: 63%
New Patients referred from Healthcare professionals: 22%

Even I was a little surprised that the vast majority of new patients to my practice are referred by existing patients or other health care providers such as; family doctors, physiotherapists, massage therapists, naturopaths and even dentists!!!

Thanks again everyone!

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - FYI: Diabetes

Sometimes I get questions from patients about various health concerns. Since I get questions about Diabetes a couple times a month, I thought I'd write about it. More specifically, I will talk about Type II Diabetes and things you can do to lower your risk of developing it.

First off, Type II Diabetes is sometimes also called, Adult onset Diabetes. Basically what happens is that your body needs to produce a hormone called Insulin, in order to properly use glucose. Glucose is a form of sugar your body can use for energy. Common sources of glucose include things like pasta, rice, bread, milk and fruit. But for patients that develop Type II Diabetes, their Pancreas doesn't make enough Insulin, or the body doesn't properly use the Insulin it makes.

This can cause a lot of trouble for these patients as the levels of glucose increases in the body. Some problems associated with Type II Diabetes include; cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, blindness and even nerve damage that can lead to amputations.

So what are some of the things you can do right now to lower your risk?

- Visit your doctor and find out what your levels of blood glucose are. Once you know where you're starting you can find out what your risks are. Note, if your parents have Type II Diabetes, you definitely want to watch your blood glucose levels as there appears to have a strong genetic component to Type II Diabetes.

- Watch your consumption of sugar and especially refined sugar. We are talking about things like Soda, Candy, processed breads and white pasta for example.

- Exercise!!! Studies have shown that exercise can help you to control your blood sugar levels.

- Eat 5-6 small meals per day. Eating like this can also help to normalize your blood sugar levels and help to control weight.

Unfortunately, I can only give you a brief introduction to Diabetes here but if you have any questions, please visit my website, COMMERCIAL DRIVE - EAST VANCOUVER CHIROPRACTOR and you can message me!

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - FYI: "The Good, The Bad and The Nutty"

Sometimes I get a craving for the munchies. You know what I mean? food that you can just pick at while you're enjoying your favorite show. Well, the next time you feel like this, put down the chips!.....and reach for some nuts!

Nuts are power packed for their size. Some studies have suggested that adding nuts to a diet that is low in saturated fats and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease. A ha! but there's a catch. The type of nuts that were studied are restricted to; almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, pecans, pistachio nuts, walnuts and pine nuts. (Sorry all you Macadamia nut lovers)

Now although nuts can be high in fat, the fat is considered a "heart healthy" or unsaturated. This type of fat may help to lower your LDL levels, also known as the "bad" type of cholesterol.

One more tidbit of healthy information. A study conducted on women who ate nuts found that those who ate 5 or more, one ounce servings of nuts per week, reduced their risk of developing Type II diabetes compared to women who ate few or no nuts at all. Wow! that's a huge difference. However, it must be said that if you are going to add more nuts into your diet, it's best to choose wisely. The "flavored" nuts ie. BBQ flavored will probably be more harmful than good. The flavoring and all that added salt will just do you more harm than good. So be choosy and smart about your nuts!!

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - FYI: Introduction to X-Rays

In my practice, I see many patients that have seen their family doctors or a clinic doctor before they visit me. In many cases, they tell me that they received an x-ray.
Occasionally, my patients will ask me, "What are x-rays?" and "What are they supposed to show?"

Well here's a brief description of what x-rays are and how they can be helpful. X-rays are a type of radiation or light energy that are powerful enough to pass through most materials. However, they have difficulty passing through denser materials such as bone and metal. Therefore, when you look at an x-ray (like the one shown), denser materials like bones, appear white while less dense matter like muscles, air or fat appear darker or even black.

So why are they useful? Well many patients that I see with significant lower back or spinal pain understandably consult their family doctors first. Especially in cases where the patient has also suffered trauma, such as a fall or an accident, the doctor is wanting to make sure there is no fracture of bones. In addition, the doctor may also want to make sure there is no serious internal injury as well, and may order x-rays to confirm this. So often the order for x-rays is to "rule out" serious damage to the bones or other internal structures.

In some instances, if the x-rays show nothing out of the ordinary, the next level of diagnostic imaging may include CT (CAT) Scans or MRI's

Hope this sheds some light on why Doctors and Chiropractors may order x-rays for their patients. If you have any questions, be sure to ask your doctor or leave me a message.

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - FYI: Let's Get Out and Swim!

As the weather starts to heat up with the arrival of summer, more and more people are going to look to the water to cool off and for exercise!

Swimming is a terrific form of exercise. Swimming requires the use of all major muscle groups, so it can be a very effective and efficient form of exercise. The type of exercise that swimmers can experience, not only benefits their cardiovascular system but because of the water, swimmers can also get a strength workout.

In addition, many people who suffer from joint problems will often report that swimming is one of the easiest forms of exercise on their bodies! With the buoyancy of the water, they feel that there is far less stress on their joints.

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - FYI: Pomegranate Packs a Punch!

In recent years Pomegranate juice seems to be popping up everywhere!

So much so that I have definitely noticed the increase in patients asking me what are my thoughts on Pomegranate. So naturally, I decided to write a post about it. I think Pomegranate and Pomegranate juice in particular, is great! But don't just take my word for it, here some facts about Pomegranate juice.

Pomegranate juice is one of the healthiest juices available. To start, one glass of this juice contains about 40% of the US recommended daily dose of Vitamin C. Along with Vitamin C, Pomegranate juice also contains Vitamins A, E and Folate in significant quantities.

In addition, Pomegranate juice is known to be high in substances called, Antioxidants. Antioxidants are important because they have been linked to cardiovascular health. Preliminary studies have suggested that Pomegranate juice may be helpful in preventing heart disease, heart attacks and stroke. But it doesn't end there. Other tests have shown that Pomegranate juice helped to slow the growth of prostate cancer in mice. So listen up men, Pomegranate juice may just be the easiest, and tastiest way to protect your prostate!

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - FYI: Eat Your Greens!

Hi All!

Now with the summertime upon us, it's ideal to go out and enjoy nature's abundance. The lower mainland produces some of the best produce in the world, so why not enjoy a summer salad tonight?

Now, we all remember our mothers gently reminding us to, "eat your vegetables!" but why are they so good for us anyways? Well here it is in a nutshell.
Vegetables (and we will focus on leafy greens today) are power packed with vitamins and minerals that we all need for optimal health. Not only that, but the fiber in these vegetables is good for our digestive health as well.

Leafy green vegetables are a great source of Vitamins; A, C and K. As well as Folate, Iron and Calcium. Folate for example, is extremely important to the proper development of a baby's nervous system.

Now, something you may not have known is that when you do eat these vegetables, it's recommended that you add just a little bit of dietary fat like butter, olive or canola oil, or dressing so your body absorbs the Vitamins better!

Wow, who would have known these delicious plants packed such a punch!

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - FYI: Calcium and Vitamin D

Did you know that Calcium and Vitamin D share a very close relationship in your body?

Calcium, as many people know, plays an important role to the strength of your bones. Especially as people get older and the concern over Osteoporosis increases, Calcium in your body is crucial to your health.

However, you may not know that for Calcium to be properly absorbed and utilized in your body, it needs Vitamin D. Luckily, Vitamin D is readily available by getting a moderate exposure to sunshine. Nevertheless, living in Vancouver, sometimes the amount of sunshine we receive is not ideal. So, as you may have noticed, milk in the grocery store is often 'fortified' with Vitamin D.

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - FYI: Golf - Watch that Swing!!

As we are on the verge of summer, more and more people are hitting the range and golf courses. Now being overzealous and taking huge wacks at the ball are normal. However, slow and steady really is a good policy.

In my practice, I notice that many people who "throw out their backs" tell me the position that got them in trouble was bending over, with a little turn. Ok interesting, because isn't that the very position that golfers find themselves in when they are hitting the ball?? In short, yes it is. So what's the moral of the story. First, stretch before you start hitting balls. A few minutes of preparing the body can save you so much pain later. Secondly, as a golfer myself, I'm a big believer in starting out slow first. Develop a rhythm you can re-produce. Then, you can gradually add more speed.

Too many golfers (mainly the guys), go out there and try to hit 250 yards right off the bat. However, unless your name begins with Tiger and ends in Woods, this is probably a recipe for disaster. So take it slow. You've got 18 holes to play, so why not start it off right and get better as you go along?

Commercial Drive - East Vancouver Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan - FYI: Want to Lose Weight? Get More Sleep!

Did you know that studies have shown that sleep deprived individuals tend to gravitate towards foods that are carbohydrate rich? In addition, your sleeping habits can be having a greater effect on your diet than you might think. A 2006 study by the Institute of Medicine reported that lack of sleep correlated to obesity.

The culprit may be hormonal. Studies have indicated that lack of sleep lowers your body's production of a hormone called Leptin. Leptin plays a role in suppressing your appetite. What's worse, lack of sleep also seems to raise the level of another hormone called Ghrelin, in your body. As you might have guessed, Ghrelin appears to stimulate your appetite.

So if you're watching your weight, take another look at your sleeping habits. It may be as simple as catching more ZZZZZZZ's!

Commercial Drive Chiropractor in East Vancouver; Dr. Dominic Chan DC - Alternative Exercise Programs

Hi all! Sometimes I get questions from patients about exercise programs that are easier on the body and joints. Due to various factors such as stiffness, age, and comfort, traditional exercise programs may not be appealing to all patients.

However, an alternative that is not only fun and healthy, but also easier on the joints is swimming or aqua-fit classes. A couple of patients have tried aqua-fit classes and have really enjoyed them. They have told me that not only do they get a good workout but they also enjoy the social setting as well. Sometimes, participating in exercise with a group makes it less intimidating and often, more fun!

So if you're struggling to find an exercise program that works for you, why not look to the pool?

Commercial Drive (East Vancouver) Chiropractor; FYI: How Young/Old Do You Have to Be to Benefit from Chiropractic?

Truth be told, there really is no age limit to who can benefit from Chiropractic care. I have personally treated patients as young as 6 months, all the way to 93 years young! Anyone, regardless of age can benefit from having their muscles and joints worked on. In addition, Chiropractic care can also help to ensure that your nervous system is working as it should and is healthy. Remember, not only is your Central nervous system (Brain and Spinal cord) the "Main computer" for your body, the nerves are also crucial to how your body communicates with your brain.

To stress the importance of your Nervous system, the brain is encased in a hard, strong compartment called your skull. Likewise, your spinal cord is protected by the bones that make up your spine. Now, just think about that. If these structures weren't vitally important to life and your health in general, why would mother nature go out of her way to protect them by encasing them in bone? Makes you think doesn't it?

Commercial Drive Chiropractor (East Vancouver) - Dr. Dominic Chan DC : FYI - Repetitive Strain Injuries ( RSI )

Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI's)

RSI are injuries that are becoming more and more prevalent in today's society as people's work becomes more integrated with a computer. We are talking about injuries such as sore wrists and forearms. Tension in the shoulders, back and neck. Headaches, numbness and acute pain, are possible signs of RSI.

Aside from the obvious discomfort experienced by the patient, RSI's also have other harmful effects. Decreased productivity at work, lack of focus/concentration, decreased morale, and possible long term disability if not addressed and treated.

Good ideas for anyone who works on a computer are;
1) take regular breaks (this not only helps the muscles but your eyes as well).
2) stretch the shoulders, neck and arms.
3) make sure you use good ergonomics and that your workstation doesn't contribute to
unnecesary strain.
4) don't ignore the early warning signs of tightness, discomfort or numbness! Neglecting these signs can make your condition worse and pave the way for a
chronic condition.

Commercial Drive Chiropractor- Answers; "What's the cracking sound during an Adjustment?"

Answers from your Commercial Drive Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan BSc, DC - "What's the cracking sound during an Adjustment?"

I get this question from time to time in practice and usually it's followed by another question, "Is it my bones breaking?"

Well lets start off by answering the last question, no. During a routine adjustment, the "cracking" sound is not your bones breaking at all. The sound is actually coming from the joint space, in other words the space in between two joint surfaces. This space is often occupied by fluid and wrapped in a protective covering called a joint capsule.

During a Chiropractic adjustment, one of the main goals is to restore motion to joints that are 'locked-up' and not moving well. During the adjustment, a joint can be stretched or mobilized. This often causes gas that is trapped in the joint fluid to come out of the solution, causing a 'pop' or 'crack' sound.

Huh? you may ask. Ok, here's an analogy I'm sure most people can relate to. Ever opened a can of pop or soda before? Well, when this happened, it was probably accompanied by a "pssssstttttt" sound, right? Well, that sound is the gas inside the pop coming out and being released because you opened the can. Hope that helps to clarify things.

Remember, if you have any questions, you can always ask them here or visit my website www.drchanchiro.com
