Commercial Drive Chiropractor- Answers; "What's the cracking sound during an Adjustment?"

Answers from your Commercial Drive Chiropractor; Dr. Dominic Chan BSc, DC - "What's the cracking sound during an Adjustment?"

I get this question from time to time in practice and usually it's followed by another question, "Is it my bones breaking?"

Well lets start off by answering the last question, no. During a routine adjustment, the "cracking" sound is not your bones breaking at all. The sound is actually coming from the joint space, in other words the space in between two joint surfaces. This space is often occupied by fluid and wrapped in a protective covering called a joint capsule.

During a Chiropractic adjustment, one of the main goals is to restore motion to joints that are 'locked-up' and not moving well. During the adjustment, a joint can be stretched or mobilized. This often causes gas that is trapped in the joint fluid to come out of the solution, causing a 'pop' or 'crack' sound.

Huh? you may ask. Ok, here's an analogy I'm sure most people can relate to. Ever opened a can of pop or soda before? Well, when this happened, it was probably accompanied by a "pssssstttttt" sound, right? Well, that sound is the gas inside the pop coming out and being released because you opened the can. Hope that helps to clarify things.
